Description
The Tuolumne County Historical Society was established in 1956 to preserve, protect and perpetuate the colorful history of one of California’s original counties. The Tuolumne County Historical Society, the Tuolumne County Museum and History Research Center, and the Tuolumne County Genealogical Society provide resources to serve and inform scholars, local residents and visitors with information on this area’s rich history.The Tuolumne County History Collection is a large volume of historical information consisting of the memories and images of Tuolumne Gold Rush through modern times. Tuolumne County’s historical resources are highlighted in this site to encourage you to visit our facilities and to participate in and enjoy our rich history.Our Mission shall be to discover, collect, preserve, and disseminate knowledge about the history of Tuolumne County and the State of California.
Volunteer Needs:
MUSEUM DOCENT
Become a museum host - Greet visitors, and according to their needs or requests explain exhibits, describe Tuolumne County history, or lead tours of the museum. Museum docents should enjoy working with people and should be able to speak clearly. Training regarding exhibits will be provided.
PHOTOGRAPH SCANNING
Scan photos and identifying information -- Work requires basic computer skills but does not require knowledge of history or specialized computer programs used in this job.
HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS
- Identify and catalog artifacts, e.g. vintage clothing, hand tools, mining equipment, books, and photographs
- Computer data entry
RESEARCH
Help to answer specific questions from the public about Tuolumne County history. You don't need to have formal training in history, or even be a long-time County resident. We have great resource materials and experienced researchers to help as needed.
