Tuolumne County Public Library Literacy Services

Description

About:

Tuolumne County Public Library Literacy Services is a learner focused program aimed at helping to build a stronger community by providing equal access to literacy that enables learners to find their strengths and contribute as family members, workers, and citizens. This is a free, confidential, and individualized service for English-speaking adults interested in developing their literacy skills.

Volunteer tutors help by empowering adult learners to celebrate their creativity, develop important social connections, and achieve lifelong goals. Through the development of their literacy skills and confidence, our learners can access better jobs, grow stronger families, renew their self‐esteem, improve the work force, and enrich our community.

Volunteer Needs:

The Tuolumne County Library’s Adult Literacy Services volunteer tutors help adult learners improve their reading, writing, math, technology, and other life skills. The literacy program is currently focusing on private one-on-one meetings and small group classes where tutors and learners can work together at their own pace. We require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age or older and complete the volunteer application materials.

After interviewing and completing tutor training you will be partnered with an adult learner. Tutors need to be willing to dedicate at least one hour a week to tutoring one-on-one or leading a class/group and be able to commit to tutoring for a minimum of six months.

Tutoring is a simple and guided process with an intake beginning with assessing a learner’s personal needs and what their various roles in life are then using this information to establish simple goals to achieve. Then volunteers work with the learner to establish a learning plan and work toward achieving personalized goals.

The goals of every volunteer tutor are to provide a safe and supportive environment, to create a set of guided learning practices, and to help learners’ build confidence in their abilities allowing them to drive the learning process becoming better independent learners.
