Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians of California
Description
About:
The Tribe's Environmental and Sustainability Department has various overlapping goals related to closed loop food systems and waste streams, food sovereignty, and land restoration. Through efforts such as our Edible Food Recovery and Composting programs, sustainable farming at our Suchumumu Tribal Farm, and environmental education with Tribal youth, we aim to make for a healthy, sustainable, and happy community 7 generations down the line.
Volunteer Needs:
Our largest event of the year is our Honoring Mother Earth Celebration, which includes both a Volunteer Day on Friday, April 18th and the Celebration Event on April 19th.
While we are still in the planning stage for this year's location and tasks, for last year's Volunteer Day we partnered with Tuolumne River Trust to host volunteers at Woods Creek Park to remove the invasive Yellow Flag Iris from the waterway. Volunteers participated in cutting and digging the invasive species from the stream, as well as trash collection.
While this will be the main event we'll be tabling for, we also host a variety of volunteer days throughout the year for tasks at our Tribal Farm and Suchumumu Cultural Center, which include activities such as sowing seeds, harvesting, general maintenance, and invasive species removal.
